Friday Mishmash

You may have seen on the news that my town had a bad shooting on Monday - it was a pretty awful day.  With a smaller town, it seems like almost everyone knew at least one of the victims.  We didn't, but it's still very shocking and sad.  Our running club actually did our 5 mile run last Saturday very close to that area - about a quarter mile away.  You never know what kind of insanity lies behind someone's front door, or how close you actually are to it.  The funerals are this weekend, and the healing process is beginning.  Rough, rough week, though.

********************

The dog days of summer are here - makes sense, as it's August, and it's supposed to be hot in Texas.  However, it was hotter last summer - we had a string of 100 degree days for over three months - but I've been feeling the heat more this year, and I couldn't figure out why.  I finally realized that last summer, I started every weekday off with over an hour in the pool.  That must have kept my body temperature lower for hours, as I don't remember waking up already sweating like I am now.  Too bad I don't belong to the gym anymore - that pool is sounding mighty tempting!

********************

I went to see my future second husband's new movie the other day, and as it was a noon showing, I quickly threw a lunch together to sneak in (yes, I'm one of those people):
Chicken salad sandwich, pretzel sticks, and a chocolate coconut water - not going to even pretend that I drink this flavor for the electrolytes - it's purely a sweet treat for me!

The movie - The Campaign - was funny.  Not as hilarious as Anchorman or Talladega Nights, but along those lines.  Always nice to see my man, and I have to say that Zach Galifianakis was really good as well.

********************

The squirrels have been so cute lately - I looked out my window to see three of them lazing in the crook of our tree.  The best shot cuts off most of the third squirrel, but you get the idea.  I think I need to go out and trim the branches of the scrub in front so I can get a clearer picture:
Baby squirrel is sleeping!  Cuteness overload for me. :)

********************

I got to play with a sweet husky on Wednesday:
Jooney - she looks like a pup, but that's because she was rescued from a starving situation - she's actually about 5 years old.
My former co-worker (from my old job at the Arts Council) recently adopted her.  It's a giant love-fest in that house - very sweet to see!

********************

I'm calling this one Funky Fashion Friday, because I was wearing a lot of color.  Ever have one of those days where you just want to wear everything that you love?  Usually I'm a little more restrained, but I threw it all on:
Subtle, I know ye not...
Found this top on clearance and I think I will live out the rest of summer in it as it barely touches my body, which is perfect for the insanely hot days here.  I don't even care that I look like I could be pregnant in it - loose and flow-y wins.
Tried to get a shot of my new necklace without showing too much cleavage (not easy; cropping to the rescue).  Anyway, the super-cute purple necklace was a REALLY early Secret Santa gift, and I love it!

I wore this when I met my former co-worker for lunch - around the house, I just wear running shorts, but I don't like to subject non-runners to that mess if I don't have to, so I wore the capris.  You also are seeing my super easy summer hairstyle of "comb it wet and let it air dry" - or "beach waves" as they call it on Pinterest - hah!

Have a great weekend - you all know my agenda...six miles and a nap!

  2. Just awful what happened there. I don't understand things like this, at all.

I like your colors and the top looks summery and flowy, not pregnant!

Glad you got to spend some time with Will. I know you've been missing him...

Have a great run tomorrow - can't wait to hear all about it!

  3. Truly a mish-mash this Friday. :)

Lovely outfit; sometimes lots of color is absolutely necessary. You pulled it off very well!

  4. So sad about the shootings. :( What is wrong with people?!

    CUTE cute outfit!!

I agree about the heat. I was running with my running club last year and it didn't seem as hot as it is now. It's a struggle to even walk. Ready for some fall.

    1. Exactly - it's a huge struggle, and the end of the heat is so far away right now. Bah.

  5. Wow that shooting is just horrible. You hear stuff like that on the news, but when its in your town, or even the town of a friend, it makes it more real somehow.

That's so funny how much you like Will Farrell. I really liked him in that movie where he was a character in a book?

Awww, cute squirrels.I never see them resting around here. Too high up in the trees I guess.

That dog has BEAUTIFUL eyes! I am most interested in the flooring in your friend's home! I've said for years I wanted to do something like that as I always have dogs and ahem ...well, you know.

Love that outfit. I know what you mean about finding an outfit that's cool. I have my summer uniform.

    1. Stranger than Fiction - that was a good one! You might also like Everything Must Go - not his usual comic movie, but really good.

That flooring is flagstone, and it's on her front patio (I think that's what you were referring to - the other is carpet, and yes, I know...). It's really pretty and I'm right with ya on wanting something that's more forgiving than carpet.

  6. I found myself trying to justify to some other grown women why I love Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler comedy and I think it probably has a lot to do with raising three boys. Love your pink shoes.

    1. I drink the regular flavors of coconut water after I run, but I save the chocolate flavor for dessert. It IS that good! :)

  8. I think you look mah-velous in your funky fashion. My favorite color palate includes oranges and the pink/purple spectrum.

I didn't realize that was your town with the most recent incident. So tragic and scary.

Somehow I've missed your crush on Will Ferrell. He's so hilarious, and Anchorman is oft quoted in our house! Have a great w/e Shelley.

    1. "I immediately regret this decision" has been said more times than I can count, but there are so many awesome Anchorman quotes...they've become part of our language, too.

  9. First Barry Manilow and now this. I.Just.Don't.Get.It. :-)

I think you look marvelous in that blouse - I love it.

I was so saddened to hear about the shooting in your town and was concerned about all those I know that live there.

  10. I hadn't heard about that shooting - yep, small towns aren't safe anymore - really no one is safe.

I love that outfit, and you do not look pregnant! Good luck on your 6 mile run tomorrow - I am still coughing so probably won't work out this weekend, and its supposed to be gorgeous - low 70s!

  11. I don't get guns, really. I grew up in a shooting family, but I don't own a gun. I see them for hunting, yes, but no reason for other people to be having them - especially assault weapons. There is only one purpose for that type of gun.
    Anyway, sorry about that...

Baby squirrel is so flipping cute! Animals just don't know how adorable they are.

I subject people to my bike shorts all the time. I figure if they don't like the sausage look, then they can avert their eyes LOL!

    1. Agree with you on the gun thing, Lori.

And you are correct - animals do not know how cute they are, and that's probably a good thing...they'd take over the world, otherwise!

  12. I thought of you when I read the news. I knew it was your town and your police officer. So sad

Do people get cranky cuz it's so hot?

What a pretty necklace! Love it!

    1. NO WE DO NOT GET CRANKY BECAUSE OF THE HEAT!!!

      Well, maybe a little. ;)

      I'm loving the necklace, too! :) :) :)

  14. Oh my goodness, the news of your shooting didn't make it up to the paper here in Vancouver. How incredibly sad. sigh. I AWW'd out loud at the baby squirrel. In fact, I'm going to AWWW again now. AWWWW!!!
I LOVE your top Shelley! Or is that "Future Mrs. Farrell"?
I'm allowed to "marry" Craig Ferguson or Anderson Cooper if I get the chance. (HA!! Especially HA to Anderson!!) I have Dennis' blessing. He in return, can leave me and marry Drew Barrymore or Ashley Judd should be choose to. Hilarious!!!!

  15. It is so sad to hear about all these shootings. We have had our share this summer up in Toronto. I don't know what the world is coming to.
I like the soft colours of your new top.
Also, this is the first year we have had these crazy little red squirrels in our backyard. They are hilarious to watch running on the fence. I don't know how you managed to get your pictures. They don't seem to stay still at all.

    1. I think the heat is slowing the animals down, which helps a lot in getting the pictures. Also, there are quite a few blurry shots that don't make the blog...

  16. That is awful, it is devastating when these nonsensical events occur, especially the death of a police officer. How very sad.

I love your colorful outfit and I'm so jealous of your non-frizzy hair.

  17. I hadn't heard about the shooting but it's always scary when it happens this close to home. I never understand why people do this to other people.

I know a bit how you are feeling during Texas Summers this weekend. Although we hit 95 degrees yesterday, the hottest day of the century and since 1994 and I hated every minute of it. Hot and Holland isn't a good combination and I suffer when it's hot. But today is better.

    Love your top!
