Wednesday Workout Update - Lonely Girl Edition

I know I'm a baby, and it's also the antithesis of most runners, but I don't like to run alone.  And yes, I realize that running is pretty much a solitary sport, except for races.  Which is why I like my running club - I love to have a group to do my long runs with.  I struggle, mentally, with getting out the door to do my runs during the week, but once I get started, I usually get in the groove and am fine with it.  Last Thursday, I bribed myself to go run with the promise of a new skein of yarn...and once I was done, I hopped in the car, drove to Michael's, and $1.25 (plus tax) later, had my prize:
Hey, it's better than bribing myself with food, right?

I'm calling it another win for the Sit and Knit diet!

And speaking of running alone, none of my walk/run ladies showed up for running club on Saturday.  Sighhhhhhhhhhh.  OK, it had stormed all night and only just stopped with the thunder and lightening about an hour before we were scheduled to meet, but still...it actually cleared up for our run, and although it was windy, it wasn't raining.  So I ran alone, again.  I know, you feel sorry for me, right?  Jeff would have run with me, but Coach Dale benched both Jeff and Coach Jessica since they were running Austin the next day.  Three miles, and while I could see everyone ahead of me, I spent the majority of the run with just my iPod, and the added irony of hearing the line from The Muppets soundtrack "...life's a happy song when there's someone by your side..." as I ran, all alone.  Problems, people...I got 'em.  Luckily for me, sweet Coach Julia came back for me and we ran the last half mile in together.

Yesterday I ran with my running buddy - we are stepping it up!  Our intervals are now 1:30 walk/2:00 run, times 12 - we did 3 miles in 42 minutes!  And tomorrow, I'm hoping to run with another friend, but if she can't make it, I'll head out there on my own...and who knows what color yarn I will end up with?

  3. Even when I had a running club, I ran alone, unless Pete was there. Back then Pete was actually faster than me and was just gracious enough to hang back or to finish his run and come back and get me. I really do completely understand not wanting to run alone on long runs - even with music it can be hard.

  4. I actually prefer to run alone - weird! Hey, do you guys have Big Lots by you? I noticed that they sell a ton of yard and it was really cheap!

Ha, had to laugh at Carla's comment!

  5. Your knitting Jones makes me happy. Also the fact that after so long you're able to run again. May you have a buddy next to you whenever you want! Back when I ran (about 18 years ago) I much preferred running alone, but when I do long walks, a friend really helps me get over counting the minutes!

  6. I thought I preferred to run alone and now I find myself looking forward to my saturday runs with a buddy.
Good for you for getting back out there Shelley! and yes that is a much better reward than food!

  7. 42 minutes for three miles sounds great to me! Just think, if I was there we could run together, and you would be leaving me in the dust. Then I would have to go and get some yarn or fabric to console myself. Hmmm. I"m liking this idea. Maybe if I stay at the gym a little bit longer, I will let myself go to the fabric store for one piece of fabric!

  8. I need to find my yarn equivalent replacement for food as a reward *sigh*. Diet Pepsi and Panda Express just aren't cutting it these days.

  9. I love it that you motivated yourself with the prize of yarn! And I get it with the exercising alone - it's part of the reason I upgraded to a different bike - so that I don't have to do this all alone anymore. Kudos for you for doing it, even when it's not the most fun.

  10. I always ran alone. The few times that I went with John became frustrating when he got faster than me and then I cried about it, so no more running together LOL!

  14. Loved that color when you posted it FB, love it now too. I haven't been walking as much cause, well one, I hurt my knee a while back, but 2 I lost my partner. She moved up to running half marathons and left me behind.

I support the Sit and Knit Diet!

  16. Oddly, I am indifferent to running alone or with someone. I like running alone and I like running with my friend or hubby too. Although I do feel its much safer to run with someone else. But I get in a zone and run my own happy pace. well, at least thats what I USED to do before I disovered the other day that I am no longer capable of running without thoughts of keeling over and gasping for breath. Bitter? Me? A bit... hehe. You are doing great.
