Athletes Honey Milk Review and Giveaway!

A couple of months ago, I was having trouble with digesting anything after running anything over 5 miles or so. Apparently my body's way of protesting what I was putting it through with all of that running did so via my stomach. Which didn't work out so well considering that after you have a hard workout, you are supposed to have protein within 30 minutes in order to help repair your muscles. I tried several things, but nothing worked until one of my running coaches, Erica, gave me a couple bottles of Athlete's Honey Milk to try.

So after a long run - I think it was an 8 miler - I came home, hopped into an ice bath (sounds pretty awful now, but it was still quite hot back then) and popped open the coffee flavor of the Honey Milk. Holy yum - was this really a protein recovery drink? Because I have to tell you - it was great! It didn't have that "protein" taste that is very distinctive in pretty much all of the other protein recovery drinks that I've tried. This just tasted great, pure and simple.

OK, so it passed the first test - taste. Next up was seeing how my very delicate stomach (I can't believe I'm writing that, but believe me, my stomach rebels after running long distances) would handle this drink. One hour went by - I felt fine. Another hour...still fine. Normally this is when things are not good, digestive-wise, but everything was A-OK. The Athlete's Honey Milk was a winner with both my taste buds and my stomach! Just to be sure, over the next few weeks I tried all four of their flavors - honey, vanilla, light coffee and light chocolate. Normally I go for vanilla in a protein recovery drink because it's the only flavor I can usually stand, but I have to tell you that I liked all of their flavors, and I especially LOVED the chocolate - it is, without a doubt, the best-tasting chocolate protein drink I've ever tried...and seriously, I have left many a chocolate-flavored protein drink unfinished because they tasted so bad, so when I tell you this is the best, it really is!

Click here to see the stats on the Athlete's Honey Milk - if you're click adverse, I'll tell you that the regular versions have 26 grams of protein and 240 calories, while the light versions have 20 grams of protein and 150 calories. Here's a couple of pictures of the nutritional data on the back of the bottles:

Athletes Honey Milk is available in grocery stores (my local HEB just started carrying it) and online - one thing that I appreciate with ordering online is that they offer free shipping! But you have a chance to win some for free - the nice folks at Athletes Honey Milk have offered to send a couple of cases of Honey Milk to one of my readers! To enter this giveaway, leave me a comment telling why you need a protein recovery drink - is it running, weight training, chasing after kiddos...what do you do that taxes your muscles?

I'll take comments on this post until 10:00 pm Thursday night, and then let random.org draw a winner, who will be announced on Friday, December 3rd, interwebs-willing. U.S. residents only. Good luck!

FCC alert: Athletes Honey Milk sent me two cases of their product to try - the review, however, is all my own opinion.

  1. Of course it can't be bought in Holland but that won't be a surprise :)

For the last three weeks I drank an old-fashioned glass of chocolatemilk after a long run and it works great and it's a cheap solution. Next weekend I'll try my protein powder with soy milk as I don't drink milk products anymore since 3 weeks or so (get back to that one in my blogpost tonight).

    Good luck for the winner!

  5. Need to to chase chickens and goats! How about that? Nah, really, besides that, I had a major hypoglycemic attack the other day and didn't have any protein drinks in the house to help get my blood sugar normal. These honey milks sound perfect for such occasions.

  6. This sounds like a dream come true! There couldnt be a better giveaway for me! Do you remember me telling you a while back in a comment that I had the same stomach thing happening after runs??? Its just Awful!! I have learned to eat a little more and to add more carbs and especially protein. I am loving protein these days! I also started weight training recently in addition ot my running. So, please enter me. I would be so excited to win!!!!!

  7. I would probably try them once and then pass them to Dave. He does more intense strength training and these would be a welcome change to his protein bars he eats afterwards. But you have definitely convinced me that they are tasty (which is hard to do because I think protein drinks are nasty)!

  8. Never had the 'delicate stomach' thing here (tee hee) but it sounds great after my weights workout. Would be easy to bring in the car and a great treat too.. The stats are pretty impressive--a lot of protein for the calorie count. Nice that they have a light version too.

  9. Now you have my curiosity peeked and I shall have to find one locally and try it for myself. Well written blog as per usual...no need to enter me in the contest.

  10. I need a recovery drink for after running, but more importantly...I need it to snack on during yoga! I get so bored during my yoga DVD, I'm always taking breaks eating/drinking something:)

  11. YES! I really want this so please sign me up or enter me or whatever. Must try this.

Guess who bought Marathoning for Mortals yesterday? :) I still have Seawall medals dancing in my head. I like that the book has a plan for any fitness level. Walk, Walk/Run, Run/Walk, or Run. You just choose where you're at physically at that moment. I think I'm walk/run right now.

Passed a Red Mango in the Woodlands and thought of you. :)

  12. Please enter me, as I would love to try this. I've lost 70 lbs over the past 2 years and as I get closer to my goal weight, I find my body protesting more after runs and workouts -- I'm having a hard time resisting the cravings for food afterwards. I used to just workout and not eat after (believe me, I had enough fat to sustain me, LOL!) but I can't seem to do that anymore. I know you are supposed to eat something protein-rich, but I seem to be coming home and binging on whatever I can find, so having some of these handy would be great.

  13. Even though I haven't managed your kind of distances yet, I have the same "issues" after a really hard workout. I'll have to give this a try.

  14. Well you know I'm all about the protein/carb recovery drinks after a long run - while sitting in an ice bath.

I distinctly remember when all of that business was going on and how relieved I was that you found something that worked.

I'd love to try it - never seen it around here!

  15. That is one reason why I hate protein drinks is because of that awful aftertaste - whether its already prepared or from a mix.

I could definitely use that after doing Jillian's last chance workout on exercise on demand!

Glad you found something that finally worked for you!

  17. My husband and I just discussed me getting more protein! I'm not a huge meat fan, so I rarely get the protein I need after my runs and strength training sessions. I need to try this- sounds yummy!

  18. Honey Milk sounds awesome! I am always looking for an easy way to refuel after a long run, ride, or swim - and Honey Milk seems like it would work perfectly. I haven't seen it in stores around here (Central KY), but hopefully I will come across some soon.

  19. Mmm...HoneyMilk! I've been drinking AHM since March and I love it! I reward myself after my weekly long run and sometimes I'll even add a little bit of vanilla AHM to my morning coffee!

  20. Athletes Honey Milk sounds like something I should try. I cannot stand the taste of most protein drinks...or at least the ones that I have come across...so the fact that you give this one a glowing endorsement is reason for me to seek this out--even if I am not a winner! Thanks for the great review!!!

  22. Its me again... :) I just wanted to say thanks for your comment on my blog you just left. Its funny because I decided to fight back on my gain and got on the treadmill and did 6.6 miles! that is a record for me...my first 10K!!!! You actually crossed my mind when I was doing it. You are such an inspiration to me!

    So thanks!!

    Oh...and whats a good time for a 10K????

  23. I'm a walker, not a runner, but I will be trying this! I've tried so many protein drinks and haven't found one I like yet. Thanks :)

  24. Thanks for your response. Boy did I wake up soooo sore today!!! My 10K time was 73:00 so 1:13:00 right? That is more than double my 5k time but I am just so proud that I did a longer distance that I dont care!!!! Once I got to 6.2 I decided I may as well go to 7 miles but apparently my treadmill just stops and turns off when you burn 1000 calories...which I dont think I have ever done! So, 6.6 miles is what it ended up being. Anyway, thanks so much for your inspiration.

  26. The light version looks okay with the 11 grams of sugar but the normal version sticks out like a sore thumb in the same department. I don't understand why they have to make these products so freakin sweet except for the sugar industry, sugar lobbyists. It's nutty.
I don't want to win any. Just giving my 3 cents.
